SMK Helmet Size Guide

Not sure what size SMK motorcycle helmet you need? Measure your head circumference just above your eyebrows and ears, then compare your measurement with the SMK helmet size chart below. A properly fitted helmet should feel snug and secure without causing painful pressure points or moving around independently of your head.

SMK Motorcycle Helmet Size Chart

The following SMK helmet sizing chart covers youth and adult sizes from Y-S through to 4XL. The measurements are taken from SMK's published sizing information and are shown in centimetres.

Important: SMK publishes individual head measurements for each size rather than full measurement ranges. Use the figures as a starting point and always try the helmet on to confirm the fit.

How to Measure Your Head for an SMK Helmet

You'll need a flexible tape measure, preferably the type used for sewing. If you haven't got one, a piece of string and a ruler will do the job.

  1. Position the tape: Wrap it around your head, passing just above your eyebrows and ears and around the widest part of the back of your head.
  2. Keep it level: Make sure the tape sits flat against your head without pulling it excessively tight.
  3. Measure your head: Record the circumference in centimetres.
  4. Check again: Repeat the measurement two or three times to confirm accuracy.
  5. Find your starting size: Compare your measurement with the SMK helmet size chart above.
  6. Try the helmet on: Fasten the chin strap and check that the helmet fits securely without painful pressure points.

If possible, ask someone to help you measure. It's surprisingly easy to position the tape incorrectly when you're doing it yourself.

How Should an SMK Motorcycle Helmet Fit?

A correctly fitted SMK motorcycle helmet should feel snug and secure, with the internal lining making even contact around your head.

SMK recommends checking that the padding sits properly against your head and cheeks, without noticeable gaps.

  • Forehead and temples: The lining should make firm, even contact without causing pain.
  • Cheeks: The cheek pads should sit directly against your cheeks and feel snug.
  • Crown: There shouldn't be noticeable gaps between your head and the helmet lining.
  • Movement: With the chin strap fastened, gently move your head up, down and from side to side. The helmet should move with your head rather than slipping independently.
  • Comfort: Wear the helmet indoors for a while to check whether uncomfortable pressure points develop.

A helmet that feels loose when new may become even looser as the comfort padding settles with use.

What If Your Head Measurement Falls Between SMK Sizes?

Because SMK publishes individual measurements rather than complete size ranges, your exact head circumference might fall between two figures in the chart.

For example, if your head measures 58 cm, it falls between the listed Medium measurement of 57 cm and Large measurement of 59 cm.

In this situation, use the chart to identify the likely sizes and try both where possible. The correct choice is the helmet that fits securely without excessive movement or painful pressure points.

Don't automatically choose a larger helmet because it feels more comfortable when first tried on. Equally, don't force yourself into a helmet that's painfully tight.

How Do You Know If an SMK Helmet Is Too Big?

A helmet may be too large if it moves independently of your head, feels loose around the cheeks or slides on with very little resistance.

With the chin strap correctly fastened, gently move your head from side to side and up and down. The helmet should stay securely positioned rather than slipping around.

If the helmet already feels loose when new, remember that the comfort padding may settle further with regular use.

How Do You Know If an SMK Helmet Is Too Small?

A helmet that's too small may cause painful pressure around your forehead, temples or the sides of your head.

Some initial firmness is normal, particularly around the cheek pads, but persistent discomfort isn't something you should simply put up with.

The comfort padding may settle slightly with use, but the protective EPS liner isn't designed to compress to accommodate an incorrectly sized helmet.

Can You Wear Glasses With an SMK Helmet?

Many riders wear spectacles with their SMK helmets, although comfort depends on the particular model, your glasses and your head shape.

Try the helmet with your usual glasses whenever possible. Check that the arms don't create uncomfortable pressure around your temples.
