Men's Summer Motorcycle Gloves

Summer motorcycle gloves are designed to provide protection while allowing more air to move around the hand. Depending on the model, they may use perforated leather, breathable textile, mesh panels or a mixture of materials.

Short-cuff gloves are popular for warm-weather road riding and commuting because they are usually lighter and quicker to put on. A short cuff does not automatically mean less protection, though. Check the wrist fastening, palm reinforcement, knuckle protection and certification rather than judging a glove entirely by how much material is wrapped around your forearm.

Leather summer gloves generally provide a close fit and good feel at the controls, while textile and mesh designs can offer greater airflow. Whichever style you choose, it should still be a proper motorcycle glove rather than something that merely looks vaguely suitable while you are standing next to the bike.

Waterproof and Winter Motorcycle Gloves

Waterproof and winter gloves are not necessarily the same thing. A waterproof glove may have little or no thermal insulation, making it suitable for wet but relatively mild conditions. A proper winter glove normally combines a waterproof membrane with insulation and a longer cuff to reduce cold air and rain getting inside.

For commuting and touring in British weather, look at the waterproof membrane, insulation, cuff design, wrist restraint and how much feel the glove gives you at the controls. Features such as a visor wipe and touchscreen-compatible fingertips can also be useful, although neither should come before fit and protection.

Check how the glove cuff works with your motorcycle jacket. Some cuffs are designed to fit over the jacket sleeve, while others sit more comfortably underneath it. No waterproof membrane can do much for you if rainwater is running straight down your sleeve and into the top of the glove.

Leather Sports and Racing Gloves

Men's leather motorcycle gloves cover everything from short road gloves to full-length racing gauntlets. Sports and racing gloves generally have a closer, more pre-curved fit and may include features such as reinforced palms, knuckle armour, palm sliders, finger protection and separate wrist and cuff fastenings.

Long-cuff gloves provide additional coverage around the wrist and lower forearm. They are commonly chosen for sports riding and track use, although the exact level of protection varies between models. Check the individual glove specification rather than assuming every long leather glove has the same construction or certification.

A sports glove should feel secure without crushing your fingers or restricting your movement. Leather will usually soften with use, but buying a glove that is painfully tight and hoping it eventually becomes the correct size is not a particularly scientific fitting method.

Touring, Adventure and Heated Motorcycle Gloves

Touring and adventure riders often need a balance of weather protection, comfort, control and durability. Waterproof construction, secure wrist adjustment, a practical cuff and enough flexibility to operate switches and controls all matter when the glove is being worn for several hours at a time.

Heated motorcycle gloves can make a major difference on cold journeys. Some use rechargeable batteries stored inside the cuff, while others can be powered from the motorcycle. Check whether batteries, chargers and bike connection leads are included, because the contents vary between models.

How Should Men's Motorcycle Gloves Fit?

Motorcycle gloves should feel close and secure without causing pressure points, numbness or restricted movement. Your fingers should reach properly into the glove without being tightly pressed against the ends, and there should not be a large amount of loose material bunching beneath your palm when you grip the handlebars.

Check that the knuckle protection sits in the correct place and that you can comfortably operate the throttle, clutch, brake and switches. The wrist fastening should also hold the glove securely. A glove that can easily be pulled off after the wrist restraint has been fastened is unlikely to stay where it belongs when you need it.

Glove sizing varies between brands and sometimes between different models from the same manufacturer. A size guide is a useful starting point rather than a guarantee. For the best check, try the gloves with your usual jacket and hold your hands in a riding position rather than merely standing with your fingers pointing at the floor.

Motorcycle Glove Protection and EN 13594

Where stated, motorcycle gloves may be tested to EN 13594:2015, the standard for protective gloves used by motorcycle riders. It covers areas including sizing, ergonomics, seam strength, abrasion resistance, restraint and impact protection.

The standard includes Level 1 and Level 2 performance. Level 2 has more demanding protection requirements, although this can sometimes bring additional weight or restriction. Where the marking includes KP, the glove's knuckle protection has also been included in the impact testing.

The rating is important, but it should be considered alongside fit, comfort, weather protection and the type of riding you do. No motorcycle glove can prevent every possible injury, but a properly fitted protective glove gives your hands considerably more of a fighting chance than bare skin or ordinary fashion gloves.
