Shoei Helmet Size Guide

Not sure what size Shoei motorcycle helmet you need? Measure around the widest part of your head, approximately 2.5 cm above your eyebrows, then compare your measurement with the Shoei helmet size chart below. The correct helmet should fit snugly without painful pressure points or excessive movement.

Shoei Motorcycle Helmet Size Chart

How to Measure Your Head for a Shoei Helmet

Getting an accurate measurement is the first step towards finding the right helmet. You'll need a flexible tape measure, preferably the type used for sewing. If possible, ask someone to help.

  1. Position the tape: Wrap it around your head approximately 2.5 cm above your eyebrows, passing above your ears and around the back of your skull.
  2. Find the widest measurement: Move the tape slightly up and down to find the largest circumference around your forehead and head.
  3. Keep it level: Make sure the tape sits flat against your head without being pulled excessively tight.
  4. Record your measurement: Note the result in centimetres and repeat the process two or three times for accuracy.
  5. Check the size chart: Compare your measurement with the Shoei helmet sizes above to find your recommended starting size.

If your measurement falls between sizes, try both where possible. A correctly fitted helmet should be snug without causing pain. Never choose a larger helmet simply because it feels more comfortable when first tried on.

How Should a Shoei Motorcycle Helmet Fit?

A properly fitted Shoei motorcycle helmet should feel secure around your entire head. It may take a little effort to put on, but once fitted it should feel comfortable without moving independently of your head.

  • Forehead and crown: The lining should make firm, even contact with your head without creating painful pressure points.
  • Cheek pads: These should press firmly but comfortably against your cheeks. Your cheeks should move with the helmet when you turn it.
  • Movement: With the chin strap fastened, gently move the helmet from side to side and up and down. It should grip your head rather than slide around.
  • Eye position: Your eyes should sit comfortably within the helmet's visor opening, rather than unusually high or low.

Different Shoei helmet models can have different internal shapes and padding arrangements. Just because one Shoei helmet fits perfectly doesn't guarantee every other model will feel identical.

How to Tell if Your Shoei Helmet Is Too Big

A motorcycle helmet that's too large can move around excessively, reducing its ability to stay correctly positioned on your head.

Common warning signs include:

  • The helmet slides onto your head with very little resistance.
  • There's noticeable space around the crown or temples.
  • The helmet moves independently of your head when you shake or turn it.
  • The cheek pads don't make firm contact with your cheeks.

If a helmet feels loose when new, don't assume it's the correct size. The comfort padding may settle further with regular use.

How to Tell if Your Shoei Helmet Is Too Small

A helmet should be snug, but there's a difference between a secure fit and one that's simply too tight.

Signs of an unsuitable fit include painful pressure around the forehead or temples, difficulty getting the helmet on and persistent discomfort while wearing it.

Some initial firmness is normal, particularly around the cheek pads. However, the protective EPS liner isn't designed to compress to accommodate an incorrectly sized helmet.

If you're struggling with an uncomfortable helmet, read our guide to dealing with a tight motorcycle helmet before deciding what to do next.

Checking Your Shoei Helmet's Chin Strap and Security

Once you've found a helmet that feels comfortable, fasten the chin strap correctly and check that the helmet stays securely in position.

With the strap fastened, gently try to rotate the helmet forwards and backwards. It should resist excessive movement and should not be easy to roll off your head.

If the helmet moves significantly or feels as though it could come off, the fit needs reassessing. Follow the manufacturer's fitting instructions and ask for professional assistance if you're unsure.

Can You Wear Glasses With a Shoei Helmet?

Many riders wear spectacles with their Shoei helmets, although comfort depends on the particular model, your glasses and your head shape.

Always try the helmet with your normal glasses where possible. Check that the arms of your spectacles don't create painful pressure around your temples.

Shoei Helmet Sizing FAQs

Are Shoei helmets true to size?

Shoei helmets follow the manufacturer's published sizing measurements, but the fit can vary between helmet models and individual head shapes. Always use the size chart as a starting point rather than a guarantee of fit.

What size Shoei helmet do I need for a 58 cm head?

According to the general Shoei size chart, a head circumference of 58 cm corresponds to a Medium helmet. You should still try the helmet on and check its fit before buying.

Should I size up or down in a Shoei helmet?

If your measurement falls between two sizes, try both sizes where possible. Don't automatically choose a smaller helmet if it creates painful pressure points. Proper fit is more important than the size printed on the label.

Will a Shoei helmet loosen over time?

The comfort padding may compress slightly with regular use, but the protective EPS liner should not be expected to change shape to accommodate your head. A helmet that's painfully tight when new may be the wrong size or shape.

Do all Shoei helmets fit the same?

Not necessarily. Different Shoei helmet models may have different internal shapes, shell designs and padding configurations. Always check the fitting guidance for the particular model you're considering.
