Scorpion ADF-9000 Helmet Review
Let's get one thing out of the way first: the Scorpion ADF-9000 is not a technological marvel sent from the future. It is a motorcycle helmet.
It is, however, a very well-equipped full-face adventure helmet designed for riders who spend most of their time on the road but still want a removable peak, a wide eyeport and the option to use goggles when the tarmac runs out.
In this Scorpion ADF-9000 helmet review, we are looking at what the features actually do, who the helmet suits and where the marketing department may have had an extra cup of coffee.
Scorpion ADF-9000: The Quick Verdict
The Scorpion ADF-9000 Air is aimed mainly at adventure, touring and all-road riders. It combines the secure chin bar of a full-face helmet with an adventure-style peak, internal sun visor, Pinlock® anti-fog insert, AirFit® cheek pads and provision for an intercom and action camera.
It is not a flip-front helmet. The chin bar stays exactly where it is, no matter how firmly you stare at it.
If you want a helmet that can handle everyday road riding, touring and the occasional bit of unsurfaced riding, the ADF-9000 makes plenty of sense. If you ride solely on the road and have no use for a peak or goggles, a conventional full-face touring helmet may be simpler.
Standard ADF-9000 Air or Carbon Air?
There are two main versions of the ADF-9000.
The standard Scorpion ADF-9000 Air uses Scorpion's TCT Ultra™ composite shell. The ADF-9000 Carbon Air uses an Ultra TCT 3K carbon-fibre shell.
Most of the useful equipment is shared between them, including the removable peak, internal sun visor, AirFit® system, Pinlock® preparation, emergency-release cheek pads and washable interior.
The carbon version is the more premium option and is intended to reduce weight while retaining the same basic adventure-touring layout. The standard composite version gives you most of the same practical features for less money.
Carbon is nice. It does not automatically make the standard version obsolete.
ECE 22.06 Approval and Shell Construction
The ADF-9000 meets the ECE 22.06 motorcycle helmet standard.
Scorpion produces the helmet across several outer shell and EPS sizes rather than using one enormous shell and filling the smaller sizes with increasingly heroic amounts of padding. This helps keep the helmet better proportioned across the size range.
That still does not guarantee a perfect fit for every rider. Your head has a shape as well as a measurement, and no amount of impressive material terminology changes that.
AirFit Does Not Fix the Wrong Size
One of the ADF-9000's more useful features is Scorpion's AirFit® system.
A small pump inside the helmet inflates air bladders behind the cheek pads, allowing you to increase the pressure around your cheeks. This can help fine-tune the fit and reduce unwanted movement, wind lift and some noise.
The important words there are fine-tune.
AirFit® does not alter the size or shape of the main EPS liner. It will not fix painful pressure across your forehead or temples, and it will not magically turn an oversized helmet into the correct size.
If the helmet moves around before the AirFit® system is used, or causes pain around the crown of your head, try another size or another model.
The pump is clever. It is not witchcraft.
Interior Comfort and Glasses
The removable KwikWick® III lining uses moisture-wicking, antimicrobial-treated fabric and can be taken out for washing.
The cheek pads also use Scorpion's KwikFit™ design, with channels intended to make it easier to put on and remove commonly worn glasses.
That does not mean every pair of glasses will fit perfectly with every head. Thick arms, unusual frame shapes and the position of your ears can all affect comfort, so bring your glasses when trying the helmet on.
It is far better to discover a problem in the shop than ten miles into a ride with one arm of your glasses slowly attempting to enter your skull.
Wide Visor, Internal Sun Visor and Pinlock
The ADF-9000 has a broad eyeport designed to provide a good field of view on the road and enough space for most motocross-style goggles when the outer visor is removed.
The clear outer visor has a first-stage city position, allowing it to sit slightly open for extra airflow at lower speeds.
Behind it is Scorpion's retractable SpeedView™ internal sun visor. It can be lowered when the sun appears without stopping to change the main visor.
A Pinlock® MaxVision™ anti-fog insert is also supplied with current versions of the helmet. A correctly fitted Pinlock® insert is extremely useful in cold and damp weather, particularly here in Britain, where the climate regularly appears to hold a personal grudge against motorcyclists.
It is designed to reduce visor misting. We would not promise that any visor will remain perfectly clear in every temperature, humidity level and riding condition known to mankind.
Peak On, Peak Off and Goggles If Needed
The adventure-style peak is made from Scorpion's Exolon® material and is designed to resist shattering. Its shape has also been developed to reduce wind buffeting at speed.
The peak can be removed by undoing its fasteners by hand, which is useful when most of your journey will be at motorway speeds or when you simply prefer the helmet without it.
Adventure peaks can behave differently depending on your height, riding position, motorcycle screen and airflow around the bike. A peak that feels perfectly calm on one motorcycle may join in with the wind and start an argument on another.
The outer face shield can also be removed without tools, allowing the helmet to be used with suitable goggles for off-road riding.
It gives the helmet genuine versatility. It will not turn a run down the A666 into the Dakar Rally, but that is probably for the best.
Ventilation
Scorpion has fitted adjustable front air intakes, internal air channels and rear exhaust ports to move warm air and moisture through the helmet.
On paper, it is a well-ventilated design. The amount of airflow you actually feel will depend on your speed, bike, screen, riding position and whether every vent is open.
That is more honest than promising “maximum airflow” as though opening the top vent will produce an arctic blast through your hair.
Intercom and Action-Camera Ready
The ADF-9000 is compatible with Scorpion's EXO-COM system and has speaker pockets built into the interior for a suitable motorcycle intercom.
Intercom ready means the helmet has space and mounting provision for an intercom. It does not mean there is a Bluetooth system hiding in the box waiting to surprise you.
The helmet also includes dedicated provision for mounting an action camera.
Use the mounting system intended for the helmet and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Do not drill holes through the shell because YouTube needs a slightly better camera angle.
Emergency-Release Cheek Pads
The cheek pads incorporate an emergency-release system designed to help trained medical personnel remove them more easily after an accident.
Removing the cheek pads can create additional space around the rider's face and make subsequent helmet removal easier.
It is an emergency aid, not a promise that a helmet can always be removed instantly or without risk. Helmet removal following a serious accident should be left to properly trained people whenever possible.

- Wide eyeport with provision for goggles
- Internal SpeedView™ sun visor

Things to Consider
- It is a fixed full-face helmet, not a flip-front
- The peak may react differently depending on your motorcycle and screen
- AirFit® adjusts cheek pressure but cannot correct the wrong helmet size or head shape
- The carbon version costs more, and not every rider will need it
- An intercom and action camera are not included
- The long feature list means nothing if the helmet does not fit properly
Who Is the Scorpion ADF-9000 For?
The ADF-9000 is well suited to:
- Adventure-bike riders who spend most of their time on the road
- Touring riders who want an internal sun visor and removable peak
- Riders who occasionally switch between a face shield and goggles
- Commuters looking for a well-equipped full-face helmet
- Riders who want built-in provision for an intercom and action camera
It may be less suitable if your main priorities are flip-front convenience, a very simple road-only design or the lightest possible sports helmet.
Our Verdict
The Scorpion ADF-9000 does not need to be described as revolutionary, unmatched, game-changing or any of the other phrases from the early-AI cupboard.
Its genuine features are strong enough to stand on their own.
It offers ECE 22.06 approval, a removable adventure peak, broad vision, an internal sun visor, Pinlock® anti-fog protection, adjustable AirFit® cheek pads, a washable interior and useful provision for communications and cameras.
The standard composite version gives you the main feature set at a more accessible price, while the Carbon Air provides the premium carbon-shell option.
As always, the final decision should come down to fit. A helmet can have every feature known to man and still be the wrong helmet if it does not suit your head.
